It snowed. Here in midcoast Maine, we got a little over half a foot. Mountains in southern California got significantly more, in what “may be the largest single-event snowfall in some parts of Southern California since the 1980s.”
When I lived in Prague in the late aughts, the locals called their country “Czechia.” Now, the name is official.
Lara Maiklem, a “mudlark” explores the shores of the Thames in London for old artifacts that wash up. She discusses things she’s found in the mud, including clay pipes, pottery, shoes, and a glass eye. “Look for straight lines and perfect circles, the things that nature doesn’t make.”

A Eurasian eagle owl named Flaco escaped from the Central Park Zoo after his enclosure was vandalized on February 2nd. After unsuccessfully trying to recapture Flaco for two weeks, attempts were called off on February 17th. Flaco currently lives and hunts in Central Park, where he’s become a minor celebrity.
I recently finished Body Work by Melissa Febos, a hybrid craft book / personal essay quartet about the power of personal narratives. It had come to me very highly recommended, and it far exceeded my expectations. If you write or work with personal narrative, I highly recommend it.
And finally: the noble history of pancakes.
